what role did the Acropolis play in the life of Athens?
Q. please answer!!
Asked by livelaughlovee. - Mon Feb 23 01:36:40 2009 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Many Greek cities had an acropolis. In times of trouble they could retreat to the "city in the air" for protection. It served as a fortified hill It was also the religious and military center of the city-state.The most famous Acropolis was in Athens. After the Persian invasion in 480 B.C. the Athenians built a magnificant group of temples there like the Parthenon (447 to 432 B.C.), the Erechtheum (421 to 406 B.C.) and the Temple of Athena Nike (425 B.C.). I hope that this has been a help to you.

A. The Pyramids of Giza is already one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. If I had to pick a new wonder of the world, I would have to choose Stonehenge. It is a marvel how those stones were brought to that place, before the invention of the wheel, and put into post and lintel form by teenagers. Amazing.

ACROPOLIS ATHENS QUESTION?
Q. Can someone please tell me where i can find a sort of 3d map, or a picture or a painting of how the acropolis looked like when it was still standing? i just visited it and i loved it , i am very curious about it. and another question...there were some work done there, are they planing on rebuilding it like it was maybe 2000 years ago or what? Thanks

A. The conservation does not aim at rebuilding the monuments, just re-instating any fallen parts that are there and conserving the pars that are still standing or that were wrongly restored 100 years ago.

A. Hector, have you looked on TripAdvisor for hotel suggestions? It s a great site that rates hotels based on user reviews. I find it very helpful. However, I would suggest looking into The Athens Gate Hotel or The Magna Grecia Hotel. They both are said to have good views of the Acropolis. Enjoy your time in Greece!

Is this speech one minute? Is it good?
Q. Hello, my name is Pericles. I was born in 495B.C. I was a Greek statesman and I was alive in the greatest time period of Athens. Being a leader in Athenian government, I influenced many ideas over 30 years. I wanted Athens to be extremely powerful so I tried to expand the power of Athens through Egypt, Boetia, and the Aegean Islands. One of my chief projects was the Parthenon. The grand temple was for our goddess Athena, which sat at the top of the Acropolis. Athens fought long and hard for power during the Peloponnesian war. Even though they lost, the soldiers of Athens were brave, strong and great for dying for there beloved city. As I said in my speech at the funeral oration for the soldiers, Athens was great and beautiful. It deserved… [cont.]

Asked by "khrIztian" - Fri Apr 10 18:09:34 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Please do not call the most beloved temple of the Athenians a fartenon. It's called the Parthenon. The word means House of the Virgin (Athena). It has 8 Doric columns in front and 17 on the sides, if you count the corner ones twice. It was built entuirely of white marble from the mountain of Penteli, except for the foundations which are of poros stone. The Pentelic marble has a lot of iron in it which has oxidized, giving the marble its famous golden patina. The Parthenon took 15 years to build. And its builders and architects were truly artists. When u first look at the Parthenon as you enter the Propylaia, u will see that the Parthenon is not on the same axis. In other words, u won't be facing the front of the temple... it… [cont.]

Q. What are 2 features of the Acropolis, Athens?
Asked by Jennifer - Sun Mar 23 02:32:10 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The Parthenon, the main structure of the Acropolis is not on an axis with the Propylaia (the main entrance gate) but is shown in 3/4 view. The same holds true of the Erechtheion . This type of arrangement is typical of temples and public buildings of the archaic and the classical Greek period. The reason is that the ancients thought it necessary that the spectator should be able to grasp at first glance both the volume and proportions of a building. This would have been impossible if a stict axial symmetry had been adopted (where only the facade is visible on first glance). The angle on which the Parthenon is built is the one you see on all the postcards and in all the picture books. Aesthetically perfect!! Also, this temple,… [cont.]

My seven are... 1) Stonehenge (they don't even know how they moved the stone needed to build it) 2) Easter Island Statues (they don't even know WHO built them) 3) The Great Wall of China 4) Pyramid of Chic-hen 5) Machu Pichu 6) The Colosseum 7) and Petra I'm still laughing about the Oprah House. Q. And when did this happen, if you only know one of the answers id stil like it. thanks
Asked by bebe - Mon Mar 23 21:42:37 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It was the work of many centuries, a work in progress. It had started in the time of the heroes (1600-1200 B.C.), with the royal palace of the Mycenaean age. Many of the buildings we now see were sponsored by Pericles, Athens' most prominent statesman from 453-429 B.C. The designer-architects were Ictinus (who also did the temple of Poseidon at Sounion and the temple of Apollo at Bassae) and Callicrates. The works were paid for out of the profits of the Athenian Empire (478-404 B.C.). The buildings included the great Propylaea (entrance buildings and staircase), the Parthenon, and the Erechtheum (temple of Poseidon Erechtheus). To this were added the temple of Athena Nike, the sanctuary of Artemis of Brauron, the large bronze statue of… [cont.]

A. I just voted... These were my choices: 1. Acropolis, Athens, Greece - because Greece is the cradle of the Western civilization and Acropolis is the symbol of it. 2. Angkor Wat Temple, Cambodia - Buddhists built some amazing structures and because Borobudur isn't on the list, then I'll have to go with Angkor Wat 3. Easter Island Statues, Chile - This is probably the only selectin on the list that truly makes me wonder as to WHY someone bothered to build them! 4. Eiffel Tower, Paris - This was my last pick on the list. I had a hard time deciding but I thought it would be nice to include one truly modern wonder on the list 5. Great Wall, China - That's a non-brainer. The wall is just an amazing feat of engineering. 6. Pyramids of Giza,… [cont.]

Athens: walk the acropolis OR the Plaka? Please Help me!?
Q. Hello! My mom brother and I are going on a cruise this summer and they have given me the task of deciding which tour to take in Athens. The two options I have narrowed it down to are almost identical in most ways but one has us actually walking into the Acropolis and exploring it. The other has us stand at a viewing spot to look at the acropolis from a short distance, than leave to spend most of the time with free time to wander the Plaka. I have no clue what to do. I am a pretty big history buff and would absolutely love to get up close to the acropolis, but I also want to take in modern Athens and I have to take my family, who are a bit less into history, into account. I have no clue what to choose. Please Help!! I really appreciate the… [cont.]

A. My advice is to take the acropolis tour...(trust me, and trust bandija, too)...It is a must to see the Acropolis close up...don't ask why, you'll figure it out when you get there. As for the PLAKA, that is something that you can do on your own during your free time. It's just a neighborhood. You don't need a tour for that.

A. I don't know of any place in the United States that has rebuilt the whole Acropolis, but there is a full size replica of the Parthenon, the temple to Athena whose ruins still stand on the original Acropolis in Athens, Greece, in Nashville, Tennessee. See the Wiki source below. You can also search for "Parthenon Nashville" for several other sites about the building and its history.

Stonehenge My reasoning: 1. I've picked mostly the "older" sites because I'm more impressed by the ability of people with less technical knowledge (and help) to build what they did. 2. I've seen all the siites I picked, except for Angor Wat (and I've seen many of the sites I didn't pick) 3. Some of the sites I picked have "hidden qualities" beyond their impressive construction (e.g. the Pyramids, Stonehenge, etc. ) in that they are also very sophisticated archeo-astrological instruments. A. Pyramids at Giza, Stonehenge, Machu Picchu, Great Wall, Taj Mahal, Eiffel Tower, and one you missed: The Gateway Arch of St. Louis. Some of those listed are not that impressive, nor noteworthy as a man-made wornder of the time or era--such as the Statue of Liberty, Sydney Opera House, Christ the Redeemer statue, Kremlin. The ones I listed continue to amaze and astound modern man as well as learned folks of the past.
